Author Interview With Shelley Wilson Plus #Giveaway

I am delighted to welcome Shelley Wilson to Me, My Books and I today to talk about her YA fantasy trilogy, The Guardian Series. You’ll also get the chance to win a signed copy of Book 1 in the series so keep reading…

Shelley Wilson’s love of fantasy began at the tender age of eight when she followed Enid Blyton up The Magic Faraway Tree.

Inspired by Blyton’s make-believe world, Shelley began to create her own stories, weaving tales around faeries, witches, and dragons. Her fantasy books blend a love of the supernatural with strong female protagonists.

Shelley’s non-fiction work is rooted in a passion for helping women to believe in themselves and become strong, motivated individuals. Can you spot the common thread between the two genres?

As well as writing, Shelley is an obsessive reader and book reviewer. She lives in Solihull in the West Midlands, UK, with her three teenage children, a black cat called Luna, and a fat fish. Shelley describes herself as a teetotal, pizza-loving, Facebook addict with a preoccupation with list writing. She would love to live in the Shire but fears that her five-foot-ten-inch height may cause problems.

Hi Shelley,

Firstly can you give us a quick introduction to The Guardian Series?

The Guardian Series is a young adult (YA) fantasy trilogy. It starts off in a small town in the UK and then swiftly moves through various gateways to other realms. Our protagonist, Amber Noble, is swept up in a quest to save her best friend from a demon realm. She meets a host of characters along the way, some good, some bad, some cute! She has always had trouble believing in the supernatural but when it’s trying to kill her and her friends she begins to believe – and fight back.

Landed with a destiny she doesn’t want and powers she can’t control, Amber’s one goal is to reunite her family and return home, but her friends, guides, and the magical characters she meets along her journey have other ideas. She must first save her friends, fight for a faerie queen, and vanquish the biggest evil the realms have ever known. It all comes to an explosive conclusion in book three – but will it be the happy ending Amber is hoping for?

How did you come up with the titles?

The initial story idea came to me when I saw an image in a magazine. The picture was of a spooky headstone in a cemetery with three hooded figures. All of a sudden I had these characters chatting in my head and talking about ‘Guardians’. When I began to plot book one these Guardians were going to be supernatural soldiers who defended the town, of course, once I started writing, the characters took over, and my Guardians became the bad guys who lived beneath the tombs of the old church – Guardians of the Dead.

In book two I introduce dragons to the story, and so Guardians of the Sky had a nice twist to it. As well as the winged saviours who love to breathe fire over any unsuspecting bad guy, I also have my faerie characters. Both the male and female fae are warriors, but only the female have wings and can launch themselves into the air to attack from the skies.

Book three is set in the Lost Lands of the necromancers and the title, therefore, became Guardians of the Lost Lands. The guardians in this book, however, are two-fold, the necromancers and demons who are defending their home, and Amber and her friends who are fighting as guardians of the realms.

I love the atmosphere of the covers. Who designed them and why did you go for those particular designs?

Thank you, I adore the covers and receive so many compliments about them. I can take no credit whatsoever for these particular designs. I work with an incredible publishing partner, Blue Harvest Creative, who produce award-winning covers for authors across the globe. I send over my synopsis and let them work their magic. I have total faith in them. I can’t wait to see what the final cover will be when we launch in November 2016.

Which of your characters would you like to meet in person and why?

I’m sure many writers’ are invested in meeting their main characters, but for me, I would have to say that I’d love to meet Tom, one of my secondary characters. I love this guy! He developed quite by accident and took to his role with charm and honour. In book one he is kidnapped by the guardian soldiers and so his part is not a big one, which was always the plan, however, he creeps under your skin at the start, and suddenly you find you’re missing him and willing Amber to save Tom in time. He refers to Amber as ‘cutie’, and I could hear him rolling the word over in my mind. He’s like the Xanda to Joss Whedon’s Buffy!

What makes The Guardian Series stand out from the crowd?

The one thing I love about reading YA fantasy novels is the pace. Teenagers don’t have time for waffle, they want to be thrown straight into the thick of the action and swept along on a wave of action and adventure. I’m very fortunate to have three teenagers under my roof who I can ask for advice on scenes and pace.

At just over fifty-thousand words per book, my Guardian Series is full of action, with plenty of twists and turns, and a host of loveable characters, and yet they can be read quickly. I write them short and punchy because that’s the kind of person I am in my day to day life. Always on the go and never leaving myself enough time for recreation, I am drawn to the quick read – so I chose to write the book I was looking for.

Why did you choose to write in this particular genre?

I have been a fan of fantasy, mythology, supernatural, and paranormal for as long as I can remember. I can vividly recall the first time I read the Hobbit and the emotions I felt as I joined in with the quest in my head. Going back even further I relished my time spent up Enid Blyton’s Faraway Tree with Moon Face and the gang.

Creating other worlds, crafting strange creatures, and blurring the boundaries of normality fascinates me. The young adult fantasy genre gives me a platform to do all of this.

Which book is your favourite and why?

Out of the three Guardian books, I would have to say the third, Guardians of the Lost Lands, is my favourite. I have thoroughly enjoyed writing this series and fell in love with all the characters. I even made myself cry on a couple of occasions! When I was writing book three, I was struggling with my depression and anxiety; this is something I’ve had for many years but due to a recent illness it had pushed its way to the forefront. Instead of letting it beat me, I channelled all my emotion into my writing. Book three goes much darker than the first two books, and Amber comes close to losing the plot – something I could relate to at the time. It was hugely cathartic to write my way through the worst of it, and it pushed the characters to make decisions that they might not have done if the cloak of darkness wasn’t hanging over them.

Sounds exciting! What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Oh dear! This is the kind of question that makes me realise I have no life! As well as writing books, I also review them. I’m a member of Rosie Amber’s Book Review Team and spend the majority of my spare time with my nose in a book. If I’m not writing or reading then I love spending a few hours with my adult colouring books – it’s a perfect form of meditation for me.

I love going to the cinema or watching films at home with a large bowl of popcorn, and I am fascinated with old buildings and castles, so I’m quite happy wandering round a pile of ruins.

Snow or sun?

Sun, definitely sun!

Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Can I say all three? I love food! Okay, okay, IF I have to choose, I’ll say dinner – you can’t beat a large deep pan pizza!

Any last words for your readers?

Thank you. It sounds so feeble – two small words – and yet I wish I could shout them from the highest building. If it weren’t for my readers picking up my books and then taking the time to leave me a review on Amazon, or interact on my Facebook page or Twitter, then I wouldn’t keep writing. The comments, giggles, photo swaps and recommendations mean so much. I don’t think a reader who interacts with an author can ever understand just how special they are. So, THANK YOU!

I’d also like to offer my thanks to you, Kate, for allowing me to run riot on your beautiful blog. I hope you and your readers enjoyed learning about my writing journey and books.

Absolutely my pleasure Shelley, thank you for answering my questions. I particularly enjoyed finding out about your favourite book and how your own life experiences affected your writing!

Blog Tour Review And Giveaway | Sunkissed by Carys Jones

I’m delighted to be taking part in the blog tour for Sunkissed by Carys Jones.

Thank you to Jenny from Neverland Blog Tours for sending me the eBook to read and share my thoughts.

Publisher: Self-Published

Publication Date: 15 January 2016

“Dawn Summers is dying. It’s 1853 and as the seventeen year old continues to fade away she has visions of the father she never knew, urging her to fight for her life.

In the small village of Fandova the only medical care is in the form of the mysterious Dr. Moralus who has a known penchant for bloodletting. Thomas, Dawn’s fiancé, is warned against inviting his intervention, but feels he has no choice, he pleads with the doctor to save Dawn’s life…whatever it takes.

MY REVIEW

How far would you go to save the one you love? This was the question that entered my mind not long after I started Sunkissed. I also couldn’t help but notice the mysterious atmosphere, it felt dark without me being able to establish exactly why it felt that way.

Dawn and Thomas were a curious couple who became caught up in something sinister. I was particularly interested to see where it would lead them as they both seemed to have a very different view on the situation. I didn’t have to wait long to get my answer.

I loved it when the storyline jumped to the present day, I couldn’t wait to see how the characters had grown and changed over the years. What followed was my favourite part of the book, I guess because I could relate to the modern-day aspect more easily. During this time the author created a strong feeling of suspense with her words, I just knew something was about to happen. And happen it did!

It had quite a fast pace and as the story unfolded I found myself flying through the pages – I couldn’t put it down.

This was a mysterious, quick read that held my attention throughout. I’m looking forward to the next instalment.

Kiera’s Quest Giveaway

Today, thanks to a very generous author, I’m thrilled to offer 3 lucky readers the chance to win an e-copy of the first 2 books in the MG/YA fantasy series, Kiera’s Quest by Kristy Brown!

First let me share some info about the books:

Kiera’s Quest: Awakenings (Book 1)

“Meet Kiera, a pretty, intelligent, and talented girl, brought up by her uncle, and abandoned by her parents. Life is as normal as she believes it to be, apart from the deep ache inside her, telling her she’s different. For years, Kiera had dreams where she ventures into a different reality. She’s not alone; a presence is always there, keeping her safe, yet she feels vulnerable, and hunted.

Zakk, Prince of Zantar, is under the Witch Queen’s spell as she tries to take over his world. He crosses paths with Kiera, and their fates are entwined.

As their journey unravels, she learns that she is not the only one affected by this prince. Who is on her side? Will she find out why she has been chosen? How can someone so young, defeat such evil? Will she find the strength to save the ones closest to her? Will this be Kiera’s only Quest?”

My overall thoughts: If you’re looking for a fast-paced quick read with an exciting and magical edge then this is for you.

Kiera’s Quest: Sacrifices (Book 2)

“After almost beating the villainous Witch Queen, Kiera’s triumph is tainted with sadness for the loss of Joe and Daz.

When the handsome Prince Zakk asks Kiera to re-enter his world in order to save her friend, she does not hesitate. On their perilous journey Kiera realizes that she is there to save many lives.

As she comes face to face with her evil nemesis once again, Kiera comes closer to finding out the truth to why she has been chosen.

Will she succeed? Will this be the end to Kiera’s quest?”

My overall thoughts: This is an imaginative, quick read that I read in less than a day, the cliffhanger ending was perfect and left me wanting more.

7 Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells – Cover Reveal, Guest Post and Giveaway!

I’m delighted to be taking part in the cover reveal for 7 Years Bad Sex, the latest book from the fabulous Nicky Wells! So without further ado, here it is…

7 Years Bad Sex Nicky Wells

7 Years Bad Sex

One wedding. One curse? Disaster ever after…

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain’t over ‘til it’s over or, in this case… it ain’t over ‘til the newlyweds sing.

EXCERPT

There was a stunned silence in the room while Alex and Casey tried to assimilate the importance of this statement. She remembered all too well her conversation with Alex on the yacht after they had trawled through the wedding video. He had pointed out to her even then that she hadn’t looked at him.
Casey shivered. She caught Alex’s eye and saw nothing but utter confusion. Liza was still standing up, one fist raised in an air punch. Sasha had taken one of Casey’s hands into her own.
Eventually Alex spoke. ‘Maybe we didn’t look at each other. So what?’
Liza and Sasha shared another look. ‘The seven-years-bad-sex curse!’ they shouted as one.
Alex burst out laughing. ‘The seven-years-bad-sex curse?’ he repeated. ‘You’re taking the mickey, right?’
Myles was chuckling so hard, he toppled over sideways on the sofa and had to hold his stomach. ‘That’s why we had to rush over here? To tell them about a seven-years-bad-sex curse?’
‘Laugh all you want,’ Liza said calmly. ‘But you’re watching it in action.’
Casey swallowed hard. She didn’t believe in curses. They were nothing but delusory superstitions from the middle ages. But still, both Sasha and Liza looked utterly serious.
‘So—so what does that curse entail?’ Casey asked, her voice almost a whisper.
Sasha produced her smartphone and called up a website. ‘It says here,’ she said, ‘there’s a superstition in many parts of southern Europe about how not looking at each other when clinking glasses during a toast brings couples seven years bad sex.’ She angled her phone so that everyone could see the screen.
‘And you were in France when you committed this ritualistic mishap,’ Liza offered helpfully. ‘So that definitely applies.’

This looks and sounds like another hit from Nicky and I just can’t wait to read it!

GUEST POST

Where did the idea for 7 Years Bad Sex come from? That’s probably the most burning question on everyone’s mind, right?

So it was at a dinner party. A rather fancy and quite drunken one, in November of 2013. Speeches were being made and toasts were being had. Except yours truly isn’t very good at holding her drink anymore. Seriously, one glass of wine does my head in. I blame two pregnancies and two lots of breastfeeding, but I digress.

Toasts were being made, and I was struggling to keep up with who was saying what. Glasses were being clinked, and I was looking the wrong way. Suddenly I was being admonished. “You didn’t look at me—that means seven years bad sex,” I was told. Of course I guffawed. Cue Nicky’s education on the superstition that is the ‘7 Years Bad Sex curse.’ I was intrigued, and the idea for this book popped in my head—inebriated though it was—right there, right then in its entirety.

It still seemed a good idea the next morning, and the week after, and after a due cooling off period I did some research, and then I got planning. I had a few other things in the hopper that I needed to write first, but finally, it got done. It’s very satisfying to see a plan from way back when finally spring into action.

PS: I’m not superstitious, nor do I believe in curses. But I have been finding myself looking at my toasting partner much more carefully these past few months….

GIVEAWAY

Nicky will be giving away two (2) signed paperback copies of 7 Years Bad Sex over on Goodreads in advance of the official launch day of 7 Years Bad Sex on 14 May. Don’t miss your chance to enter!

EXCERPT

‘It must have been horrendously frightening, Cathy,’ Holly Willoughby’s sparkling white teeth are shining directly into my eyes causing me to spontaneously blink, ‘finding yourself stalked and then almost strangled to death.’

‘Oh yes,’ I nod and refill my water glass. ‘Terrifying.’

Although, I squirm as three huge cameras circle closer like a cackle of hyenas moving in for the kill, nowhere near as terrifying as being on live TV. All through the interview I keep getting these uncanny impulses to indulge in a touch of Tourette’s, spouting obscenities while intermittently flashing a nipple.

‘And then not only did you capture the culprit but you managed to turn the situation round and through it launched the most talked about advertising campaign this decade.’

‘Not just me…’ I grin bashfully as Camera One’s red light gives a little wink in my direction.

‘So as a woman who’s spent the last eight years as a mother and housewife,’ Holly continues brightly, ‘how are you finding it being back out in the workplace?’

How am I finding it? Fantastic. Sodding-bloody-fantastic, I want to reply but for some reason, ever since the camera did that little wink, my throat simply refuses to co-operate.

‘It’s a…a…’ I cough and reach for the water, ‘case of…’

‘And balancing this brand new exciting career with taking care of two primary-school age children?’ prompts her co-presenter nicely. ‘You must be very organised…’

‘Well, Joseph… I mean Jason… I mean…’

And that’s it. My mouth freezes while I rifle through my memory bank trying to recall his name. Jason or Joseph… But no, it can’t be either. Joseph was the biblical character that this guy portrayed at a West End theatre and Jason…he was the ex-Neighbours actor who also played Joseph as well as dating Kylie Minogue and picking David Guest’s nose on some reality show. So this guy, the one sitting in front of me, all mike-ed up, awaiting an answer while millions look on… God, who is he? Sweat pools under the armpits of my new Vivienne Westwood polka-dot dress with the waist-cinching corset as I scan and rescan his grey speckled hair and cute baby face. ‘The thing is…’

A reassuring hand rests on my arm. For the fifth time this morning, Rosa steps in to save me.

‘Oh she is, Phillip,’ she laughs lightly. ‘Super-organised, that’s our Cath. Packed lunches prepared night before. Uniforms folded neatly on chairs. Dishwasher and washing machine fully loaded. Plants watered. Fish fed. Wonderwoman has nothing on her.’
She slaps me on the back, just as I take another gulp of water. Instead of drowning the giant South American toad now living in my larynx, a fountain shoots out from my mouth and nose.

Holly smiles once more as she smoothly links back to the weather, before the cameras wheel away, allowing her to dab at her water-spotted jacket and mercifully ending the second most scary moment of my entire life.

“In a recent survey 65% of mothers admitted feeling undervalued, over-criticised and constantly tired.

Cathy is no exception. Her dull, uneventful days as a stay at home, mother of two, are radically transformed however with the arrival of a heavily lipsticked postcard addressed to husband, Declan. Who is the mysterious La La? Could Declan really be having an affair? And is Cathy actually being stalked?

Whatever – it will definitely prove riveting gossip for the Tuesday Twice Monthlies, Cathy’s ‘Mothers Restaurant Research’ group where scandal flows as recklessly as the wine. But what starts as a light-hearted investigation with best friend Raz, soon turns into something much more sinister.

With a possible murderer on the scene, a sexy admirer igniting long-forgotten sparks, and all her friends hiding secrets, it’s not only Cathy’s marriage that’s in jeopardy. Add in the scheming antics of Declan’s new assistant, the stress of organising the school Save The Toilet’s dance and the stage is set for a dangerous showdown and some very unsettling, possibly deadly, revelations.”

shannons law

“Wild child inner city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. In Fleetworth-Green she encounters signs of people and drug trafficking and homes in on serious millionaire criminals.

As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need. Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl’s bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet.

Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her.

All the same, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission, their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.”

MY REVIEW

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this eBook to read and give an honest review. Having previously enjoyed the first book in the Passion Patrol series (review here) I was keen to get reading.  Although this is part of a series I would just like to say that it also works very well as a standalone read.

The storyline jumped straight into the action and I found myself quickly hooked on Shannon’s straight-talking attitude.  She yearned for something exciting to happen in the quiet village of Fleetwood-Green so she could put her police skills to good use. She came across a group of teenagers in the woods and this led her to Earl Spencer who had an instant affect on Shannon.

Shannon was a brilliant character, she was very strong and feisty, some of her comments literally had me laughing out loud!  I was curious as to why she was transferred to the village from Brixton but it soon became clear.  Spencer was a mixed character – he had a nervous, sweet side but I also got the feeling of strength and power from him.  The supporting characters were as interesting as the main characters, I particularly liked Mel who made up a great comedy duo with Shannon.

The criminal side of things was really interesting for me, a gruesome discovery got me thinking up all sorts of things – I felt like a detective as I tried to solve the case alongside Shannon.  There were some very tense moments as she performed her duty as a police officer, a heart-pounding rescue mission was one of my favourite parts of the book.

Once again there were times when I found the authors writing style to be almost poetic, especially the romantic/steamy/sexual scenes.  Shannon’s sexual encounters were described in detail so please bear this in mind when you choose to read this book – it may not suit everyone’s tastes.

This was another enjoyable read from Emma Calin, romantic and sexy with a twist of police action!
