MY REVIEW

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this eBook to read and share my honest opinion. Regular Me, My Books and I readers may have already seen my reviews of the previous three books in the series but in case you missed them, click here.

Events at the end of book three were quite shocking so I was excited to find out what the final book would have in store for me but there was also a part of me that felt sad the series was coming to an end.

I soon found myself immersed in the storyline, eagerly trying to find out what would happen to Kiera and co. The author successfully created more tense and dramatic moments which kept me on the edge of my seat – even after four books I couldn’t predict what the Witch Queen would do next!

I could almost feel the connection between characters and this somehow made each scene believable (yes I know it’s fantasy but there you have it). Kiera’s abilities have grown with each book and that was no different this time around, it’s been fun watching her character evolve.

This was a quick, yet action-packed, read which provided me with some much-needed escapism. I’m giving it 5 stars!

MY REVIEW

It had been a while since I had visited this magical world so I was little concerned that I’d struggle to fall into the storyline. I needn’t have worried because in no time at all I was wrapped up in what was going on in front of me.

Something that has always stuck in my mind about this series is how likeable the characters were and this book was no different. I wanted the best for all of them so when an unexpected twist came along I felt confused but intrigued to find out where it would lead.

For me, this wasn’t just a story about a wedding (as I had first thought it would be after reading the title) but also about self-discovery and finding your place in the world.

The author has a magical style of writing that makes the impossible seem possible and brings all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures to life!

This was a quick and enjoyable read. A fabulous addition to The Star Child series.

Book Spotlight | Thirst: Blood of my Blood by R P Channing

Today I’m back with another fab book in the spotlight:

Book Title - Thirst Blood of my Blood

by R P Channing.

THE BOOK

Thirst by R P Channing Cover

~ Kira Sutherland ~

After a near fatal accident (and getting cheated on by her ‘boyfriend’), and beating up the lead cheerleader (with whom the boyfriend cheated…), and being labeled as having ‘issues’ in her school because she, uhm, sees ghosts, Kira is left with two choices:

  1. Continue her ‘therapy’ (where she’s told the ghost is a hallucination and also gets her legs ogled too often…)

Or

  1. Go to Starkfield Academy, a boarding school for “Crazies and Convicts” (as the social media sites call them.)

She chooses the latter…

~ Cory Rand ~

Cory Rand has not had an easy life. His mother died in a car accident when he was twelve, and so did his mother’s best friend…sort of. You see, Janice made a promise to take care of Cory just before she died, and so she lingers. Undead. A ghost that watches out for him.

Brought up in an abusive home, Cory quickly falls into a life of disreputable behavior. After his third offense (which was prompted by a girl, as usual – he has a weakness) he’s left with two choices:

  1. Be tried as an adult and share a cell with a guy named Bubba (he thinks…)

Or

  1. Go to Starkfield Academy, which Cory is pretty sure is run by vampires. But, hey, at least he’ll get an education.

He chooses the latter…

It’s at Starkfield that Kira meets Cory Rand, a boy with an insatiable Rage who sees ghosts, too. As well as other things, other things from his past, things that confuse him, things like fire and witches and demons.

Things he’s always ignored.

Until now.”

EXCERPT

The Puppy Eyes

My life was perfect.

I had the perfect shoes and the perfect friends and I lived in the perfect house. My nails were perfect and my hair was perfect (except on Sundays, it was always windy on Sundays) and I had the perfect clothes. My lips were a perfect red and my hair perfectly straight. My eyeshadow was perfect, my hips were…okay, and my waist…well…also okay. Nothing was wrong in my life.

But then there was Jack.

Jack was a problem.

He needed to go. I mean, when you’re dead, you’re dead! I had told him this endlessly. Somehow, Jack didn’t get it. I mean, I felt sorry for the guy. Sure. Being stuck between this life and the next. But just because I found him, does that mean I needed to keep him?

I think not!

Sadly, when Jack got that look in his eyes, that weary, almost teary (if his tear-ducts worked) look, I melted. I just couldn’t send him away. Not even Jack knew where he would go after he died.

Would he, like, die? As in — dead, nada, kaput, finito, gone, no more? Bye bye, sayonara, ciao, hasta la vista baby and all that?

I couldn’t have that on my conscience. No way.

I lay on my bed, wondering what to do about him. “Jaaaaaaack,” I hollered.

“Jaaaaaaack!”

Still no answer.

“Jack!”

Jack…materialized.

His eyes rolled down to the ground. He was making those puppy eyes again. “Jack, I told you not to do that. I told you not to play on my sympathies.”

His puppy eyes became worse.

His skin was gray and, well, dead.

“Oh, brother,” I said. “I have to do something about you. If mom finds out I have another ‘imaginary friend’ — at my age — well, I’d die of embarrassment. But, like, really die. Not like you.” I wondered about this. Would I die? Was Jack a freak accident, or did all people live on like him? Think of the cemeteries…

The idea excited me somewhat.

“What would you have me do, Miss Kira?”

“Knock off the Miss Kira crap. I told you it’s just Kira.”

“Yes, Miss Kira.”

The dead. There’s just no reasoning.

“Fine, Miss Kira it is then.” Rover barked like a lunatic in the garden. No one else might be able to see Jack, but I was sure my dog could.

“I have to do something about this,” I mumbled.

R P Channing started writing three years ago, but never published anything even after churning out over a million words of fiction. Thirst: Blood of my Blood is the first book he dared to publish. When asked why, he said, “Because it’s the first thing I wrote that my wife actually enjoyed reading.” When not hammering away (most literally) at his keyboard, he can be found buried in a book, reading anything from romance to horror to young adult to non-fiction to comedy.

“When her parents are murdered before her eyes, sixteen-year-old Helen Cartwright finds herself launched into an underground London where a mysterious organization called the Dictata controls the balance of good and evil. Helen learns that she is one of three remaining angelic descendants charged with protecting the world’s past, present, and future. Unbeknownst to her, she has been trained her whole life to accept this responsibility. Now, as she finds herself torn between the angelic brothers protecting her and the devastatingly handsome childhood friend who wants to destroy her, she must prepare to be brave, to be hunted, and above all to be strong, because temptation will be hard to resist, even for an angel.”

Kiera’s Quest Giveaway

Today, thanks to a very generous author, I’m thrilled to offer 3 lucky readers the chance to win an e-copy of the first 2 books in the MG/YA fantasy series, Kiera’s Quest by Kristy Brown!

First let me share some info about the books:

Kiera’s Quest: Awakenings (Book 1)

“Meet Kiera, a pretty, intelligent, and talented girl, brought up by her uncle, and abandoned by her parents. Life is as normal as she believes it to be, apart from the deep ache inside her, telling her she’s different. For years, Kiera had dreams where she ventures into a different reality. She’s not alone; a presence is always there, keeping her safe, yet she feels vulnerable, and hunted.

Zakk, Prince of Zantar, is under the Witch Queen’s spell as she tries to take over his world. He crosses paths with Kiera, and their fates are entwined.

As their journey unravels, she learns that she is not the only one affected by this prince. Who is on her side? Will she find out why she has been chosen? How can someone so young, defeat such evil? Will she find the strength to save the ones closest to her? Will this be Kiera’s only Quest?”

My overall thoughts: If you’re looking for a fast-paced quick read with an exciting and magical edge then this is for you.

Kiera’s Quest: Sacrifices (Book 2)

“After almost beating the villainous Witch Queen, Kiera’s triumph is tainted with sadness for the loss of Joe and Daz.

When the handsome Prince Zakk asks Kiera to re-enter his world in order to save her friend, she does not hesitate. On their perilous journey Kiera realizes that she is there to save many lives.

As she comes face to face with her evil nemesis once again, Kiera comes closer to finding out the truth to why she has been chosen.

Will she succeed? Will this be the end to Kiera’s quest?”

My overall thoughts: This is an imaginative, quick read that I read in less than a day, the cliffhanger ending was perfect and left me wanting more.

Heritage: The Grimoire Saga 3 by S.M. Boyce

19140641

“Kara Magari isn’t normal, even by Ourea’s standards—and in a world of shape-shifters and soul stealers, that’s saying something. To the royalty, she’s a loose cannon. To the masses, she’s a failure. But Kara doesn’t have a home to go back to anymore. This war-torn world is all she has left, and she’ll save it even if she dies trying.

An ancient isen named Stone takes an interest in Kara’s training, and it turns out he has more answers than he originally led her to believe. Braeden Drakonin has slowly rebuilt his life after the betrayal that tore it apart. His father wants him dead, and frankly, his so-called allies wouldn’t mind that either. Private alliances are formed. Secrets are sold. Tension is driving the armies apart. A single battle will end this war, and it’s coming. Braeden may be a prince, but it will take more than royal blood to survive. He must take the fight to his father’s door—and win.”

MY REVIEW

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this eBook to read and give an honest review. This is the third book in the Grimoire Saga, I reviewed the first two books here. It had been a while since I read the previous book so I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t remember what was happening but it came back to me surprisingly quickly once I started reading. I was transported back to the intriguing world of Ourea and I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next.

Something I particularly enjoyed was learning more about Kara’s grandparents, it answered some of the questions I had and gave me a clearer insight into her heritage. In the previous books Kara always seemed to find herself in some kind of danger and this book was no different as there was lots of nail-biting action. Kara’s increased powers made for some interesting battles, one scene in particular had me on the edge of my seat – it was so exciting!

Running alongside all the action and excitement was a thread of romance which has been gradually gaining momentum as the Saga progresses. It became more intense and meaningful in this book and provided some much-needed peaceful moments between the action-packed battle scenes. The epilogue was tense and answered another of my questions, it leads the way for what I hope will be a fantastic finale.

The author’s writing was descriptive in a non-overwhelming way, it enabled me to picture each scene vividly in my mind which is quite an achievement considering how imaginative Ourea and it’s inhabitants are.

Heritage was an exciting and imaginative page-turner, another great episode in this thrilling Saga.

My Review

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this eBook to read and give an honest review.  I’m a big fan of this series and you can read my previous reviews here.

This final book picked up where book two, The Fallen Stars, left off.  Cali had been taken and Kellen was desperate to find her.  In no time at all I was pulled back into the magical storyline, once again filled with danger and romance.

Even after two books the characters were still developing right before my eyes as they learned more and more about themselves and their families.  For me the characters were all likeable, especially the strong supporting characters and even the bad guys seemed to spark something in me!  This meant that I had my fingers and toes crossed for a good outcome as I read through the many ups and downs they faced. Singer was a great addition to the already fantastic cast, I liked her personality and I loved what she brought to the storyline.

In the middle of all the danger was a moment of peace which indulged my romantic side, I really enjoyed this little break but was excited to get back to the action!  Something I had been looking forward to was their return to Faerie, I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen there.

As always the writing style was beautifully descriptive and enabled me to visualise each scene easily and clearly.  I particularly enjoyed the detailed battle scenes that played out in my mind like a movie.

A fabulous epilogue ended this series in a satisfying way.  It’s always sad to say goodbye to characters who I have taken to my heart but I felt that the author rounded everything up perfectly so I finished with a smile on my face.

This was another imaginative read that captivated me throughout, a wonderful finale!
