Forever (Angels Among Us #3) by Linn B. Halton

Forever

“Ceri is alone for a reason. She’s not meant to fall in love. She’s here for one purpose only.

Love is a powerful emotion, but can it change the course of someone’s destiny?

This is a romance story that explores the possibility of there being something more than just the ‘here and now’.

Now, Ceri’s journey comes to an end in Forever – the final part of the Angels Among Us trilogy.”

MY REVIEW

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this ARC to read and give an honest review.  After reading and thoroughly enjoying the first two books Falling and Forbidden (my reviews of these can be found here) I couldn’t wait to read the next instalment of this series!

The previous book had left me on a cliffhanger so I was pleased to discover that this picked up where that one had finished.  Ceri was struggling with what she wanted her life to be and what her life was destined to be – there was a part of me which wholeheartedly agreed with her but another part of me that understood she had an important job to do.  This book certainly raised some conflicting emotions within me.

Alex was a bit of a mess to begin with, his emails made me feel so sad for him.  Switching to his point of view and finding out what was going on in his head was a crucial part of the story for me, it meant that I had a clear picture of the situation in my mind. Ethan’s involvement in this book surprised me especially as the storyline began to head in an unexpected direction, once again I was torn by my conflicting feelings because although I felt that this direction made sense I just didn’t want it to happen!

I really enjoyed reading about Ceri’s life as a psychic medium and I loved her friend Sheena’s matchmaking attempts – I have to say a BSB simply used to mean a Backstreet Boy in my world but now it’ll never be the same again! Other favourite moments included: an unexpected message for Ceri, a glimpse into Alex’s dream and a worrying dog incident.

Every time I’ve read a book from this series I’ve felt a sense of calm and well-being, they simply radiate peacefulness.  I also enjoy how they stretch my mind to think beyond what I see in this life, I feel like my eyes have been opened just a little bit more to the things that are out there.

Once again I loved the ending, I thoroughly enjoyed following Ceri on the next step of her journey and I can’t wait for more excitement from these characters.

This was another great episode from a wonderful series – spiritual with a dazzling touch of romance.

forbidden

“I’m in a tunnel. It’s dark and yet little rays, like pinpricks of sunshine breaking through foliage, seep towards me from every angle. Too minute to light my path, I wonder if they are really threads drawing me along in case I lose my way. My body is cold and I feel disconnected, as if I’m no longer whole. Alex is calling my name, his voice distant. I want to find my way back to him but I’m being coaxed away, carried on a wave of light within a dark place. Am I dreaming? Will this moment pass and then I’ll simply wake up next to Alex, content in the knowledge that the future stretches out ahead of us?
Fear takes control of my mind. I want to go back. I’m frightened and I don’t want to be in this place. It seems I am incapable of doing anything and the fact that I don’t have a choice is terrifying…”

ABOUT

Ceri thinks she sees angels…everywhere. She struggles to keep separate what feels like two very different sides to her life. As a manager in an advertising company she’s been working with the gorgeous Alex for two years. The have a friendship based upon the image she portrays whilst she’s at work and it helps to keep her sane. One mad, crazy night spent sharing their secrets and a lot of wine result in them ending up in bed together and their relationship changes. When Alex explains that the reason he doesn’t date is because someone broke his heart, how can Ceri admit that she feels a deep connection to him?

Ceri knows she’s different. What she doesn’t fully appreciate is that her task in life is to correct a series of incidents that alter the course of many of the people’s lives with whom she comes into contact. She’s simply putting right little errors that could ripple outwards and change the course of their destiny. However; when she finds herself getting pulled into things that happen around her, how can she prove that she really has made a difference? Is it all in her head?

She’s alone for a reason; she’s not meant to fall in love in her earthly life. Alex is supposed to cross paths with her and help Ceri during a phase where she begins to question the signs she’s being given. It’s meant to be a turning point for them both—but in opposite directions. They are destined to travel very different paths…but Ceri doesn’t know that and neither does Alex…

“No one chooses to see angels, why would they?”

This is a romance story that explores the possibility of there being something more than just the ‘here and now’. If that were the case, how would it work? What keeps us on the path determined for us, when we have free will? How would the spirit world link with us as we go about our lives? Love is a powerful emotion, but can it change the course of someone’s destiny?

MY REVIEW

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this ARC to read and give an honest review.  After reading and thoroughly enjoying Falling (Angels Among Us #1) (review here) I couldn’t wait to read the second instalment of this trilogy!

Forbidden picked up where Falling left off, I was pleased to get an explanation for the events at the end of the previous book and to also discover the reason for Ceri’s ability to see angels.

Ceri had a whole new awareness this time round, she saw the world in a very different light and she knew what she had to do – I was fascinated by her ethereal life.  A telephone call with her brother Seb really got my heart pounding as I certainly wasn’t expecting the exciting revelation that came from it.

Alex’s point of view raised some interesting and unexpected issues, I was keen to see what kind of effect it would have on his relationship with Ceri – I hoped it wouldn’t be bad though.  When he took Ceri on a romantic trip to France I was hooked on the wonderful descriptions of the places they visited – as always with this author, the writing made me feel as though I was experiencing it all too!

Once again I got chills whenever Ceri saw an angel or received a message, one of my favourite moments was when a message came through for a man called Pete – it was very touching and something that stayed in my mind after I had finished reading.

I loved how the spiritual side of the storyline was effortlessly woven in with the romantic side, the two combined beautifully to create an almost calming atmosphere.  The book gave me lots to contemplate (destiny, energies, reincarnation etc) but also included some good old-fashioned secrets and lies to satisfy my dramatic side.  This was where the final scene came in and I have to say it was fantastic – it had such a nail-biting cliffhanger that left me itching to find out where it will lead!

This book was spiritual, romantic and exciting, another superb read from Linn B. Halton!

GUEST POST

Forbidden, part two was the most challenging to write in this series, even though three years of research went into looking at theories on how angels might touch this earth. Whether or not you believe in the existence of the life after death, I think more people than care to admit think there is ‘something’ going on. Something that cannot be explained or proven beyond belief and I think that’s the point! If you need cast iron proof then you aren’t ready to open yourself up to the possibilities. What I have found, after years of experiencing psychic incidents and pushing them to one side, is that when you open your mind the proof comes. I feel lucky to have been given a soul mate who was even more sceptical than I was; then honoured that we have been given shared experiences. Freaky at first I will admit, for both of us but another thing that ties us together in a very special way.

Whilst this is a series of romantic novellas with a psychic theme, I have tried to reflect what I actually believe – based upon experience and research – is how it might all work. Kate, from MeMyBooksandI, was one of four beta readers who read the first manuscript and gave me feedback so that I could get the romance/psychic balance just right. I hope that readers will see it for the love story it is, but also wonder ‘what if?’. Ceri and Alex are fighting to stay together. Often in life things threaten to pull a couple apart – sometimes it’s baggage from the past that catches up with us and that’s true too, as Ceri’s journey continues…

MORE FROM THE AUTHOR

My bio will tell you that I love walking on the beach – preferably when it’s deserted, or overcast and windy. It’s where I go to think and blow away the cobwebs. Although I’m afraid of deep water because I can’t swim, it holds a fascination for me and I have a connection with it that is cathartic, but explainable.

I live in the small village of Arlingham, on the banks of the River Sever, in the UK. I live with my adorable, and very understanding, husband Lawrence. Without him I wouldn’t be able to write – he keeps me topped up with cups of coffee whenever he’s not at work and pretends it’s normal to be on the computer sixteen hours a day! The other man in the house is Mr Tiggs – a feline with ‘catitude’. As long as there’s an endless supply of tuna, he’s more than happy to sprawl out on the floor next to me whilst I write. He’s ‘No. 4’ in The Quintessential Gemini, although I don’t think he realises I’ve blogged about him too…

I began writing in 2009; I wrote five manuscripts one after another and then Googled ‘what to do with a completed manuscript’ eighteen months later. Naïve? Yes. Fun? Yes! My first book was published in February 2011.

Did I know I would become a writer at some point in my life? Yes, from an early age. I also instinctively knew it would only happen after my two boys had grown up as I sensed once I began writing, I would never want to stop.

Did I know I would write romance with a psychic touch? Romance – yes. Psychic romance? No. It just happened. The reason is that I have so many ‘experiences’ it is now a part of my daily life and to me it’s normal. They say ‘write what you know’ and that’s what I do. I have been totally amazed at the number of readers who get in touch to say that they can connect with some of the incidents included in my stories. For me that ‘contact’ was unexpected and, as writing is a rather solitary pursuit, it’s a welcomed ‘feel-good’ factor for me.

The future? Spending my days with characters I love to create, drinking lots of coffee and counting my blessings that I can finally enjoy this ‘me’ time!

MY REVIEW

The very first sentence captured my interest because it mentioned Ceri’s ability to see angels – angels and the afterlife have always intrigued me so I knew from just one line that I would be hooked on Ceri’s story.  It was obvious from the start that she had received plenty of negative feedback about her ability and it made me feel sad that she had to suppress her instinctive need to talk about it, if I were in Ceri’s position I would definitely want to share my experiences!  The first angel sighting that was mentioned gave me chills as I was able to visualise it so clearly and the goosebumps continued with each sighting thereafter (I’m such a scaredy-cat).

Ceri had a non-identical twin brother called Seb who was not afraid to tell her what he thought about her ability, he certainly wasn’t a believer so Ceri kept her feelings to herself even when she knew that Seb’s life was about to be thrown into turmoil in some way.

I liked how Ceri admitted to becoming a different version of herself whenever she walked into the office of the advertising company she worked for, I think everyone has different versions of themselves for different situations so this really got me thinking about the various versions of me :) .

Ceri was a wonderful character, she used her ability to help people and I admired her for that but whenever she wasn’t able to help someone she felt incredibly guilty.  It was during those times that I wanted to reach into the book and give her a hug to make her feel better!

There was a great mix of supporting characters, I particularly liked Alex who worked with Ceri because he seemed fun – I could easily picture him in my mind and I loved the good effect he had on Ceri.  However, as the story progressed his behaviour began to confuse me, not in a bad way but in a ‘I have to know why he’s acting like that‘ kind of way.  This was why I felt so relieved when I got to read from Alex’s perspective, I was surprised and intrigued by what I discovered about him – this is exactly why I love to read a story from both sides, I think it really opens up the storyline.

Once again the authors descriptive writing made me feel like I was living the story instead of just reading it, so expect to feel a variety of emotions as you follow Ceri on her journey.  The end left my heart pounding furiously, I had all sorts of questions and possible theories racing through my mind so I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next in Forbidden.

This was a spiritual, emotional and thought-provoking read with a touch of romance, a great start to an intriguing series!

Angels Among Us series Ceri

GUEST POST

Reviewers are so important to an author, but I don’t know whether readers appreciate that professional reviewers like yourself, Kate, often work closely with authors. I have to say you played a HUGE part as a beta reader feeding back on this series. In particular, your feedback for part 2, Forbidden, was critical. I only had a small panel of beta readers with a 50/50 split between people who believed ‘something’ exists and those who aren’t so familiar with the subject, but were reviewers of romance.

As a long-time sceptic myself, I knew that the balance between the romance (I am, after all, a romance writer first and foremost) and the ‘psychic bit’ had to be just right. I know that for many people even talking about the subject is weird – a bit like believing UFOs exist. However, there are a lot of people who do believe and I was concerned that not only did I have to get the romance/psychic balance right, but I also had to explain how angels living on this earthly plane might ‘work’ with sincerity. I risked alienating people who have spent years researching this subject and have strong beliefs, and those to whom the romance element is first and foremost, but the psychic element adds a little intrigue.

I suppose I’ve been researching psychic phenomena most of my life. My earliest experiences go back to a young child in a cot and that’s a rather freaky thing to admit! Detailed research for this series began about three years ago, but even then it was very difficult when I sat down to spell out clearly the details of how angels, living among us on this earthly plane, might work. Just writing those words still sounds very ‘hippy, out there’ even to my ears! Your reaction to Forbidden (part 2) was amazing, but clearly there was a need for me to revisit chapter two, where the explanation and information given was (I admit) a LOT to take in. And that was precisely what you told me! So I tweaked and did a little cutting … Forbidden won’t be released until November 2013, so I’m getting ahead of myself …

Thank you for giving me the opportunity Linn, it was my first experience as a beta reader and I enjoyed every minute!

After Obsession – Carrie Jones and Steven E. Wedel

After obsession

“Aimee and Alan have secrets.  They both have intriguing pasts and abilities they prefer to keep hidden.  But when their lives intersect in a cold Maine town, they can’t stop their secrets from spilling out.  Strange things have been happening, and they both feel strongly that something, or someone, is haunting them.

But it’s actually another friend, Courtney, who’s truly in trouble.  In a desperate plea to find her missing father, she has invited a demon into her life – and into her body.  Aimee and Alan can only exorcise the ghost together.  And they have to move quickly, before it devours not just their friend, but everything around her…”

I remember reading a review for this book and thinking it sounded interesting so I added it to my wish list and bought it when I was on a book buying spree (I don’t manage too many of those lately but they’re always epic when I do :)).

To begin with I learned about Aimee and her abilities, I immediately got the feeling that she considered them a curse though and I guess part of me could understand why.  Her friend Courtney was going through a difficult time but I really liked her – her pen story actually made me choke on my drink! Unfortunately as the story progressed and darker things took over her fun personality changed, I wondered if she would ever go back to her old bubbly self.

Alan seemed like a tough character, he was very intriguing particularly when his Indian side shone through.  He was Courtney’s cousin and this inevitably led to him meeting Aimee.  This was where the romantic side of the story came in to play – they were clearly drawn to one another, even though Aimee already had a boyfriend, and I found their connection exciting to read especially seeing as the story was told from both of their perspectives.  Their blossoming relationship brought a touch of lightness to an otherwise dark book and that was something I appreciated.

There were some rather eerie moments which mainly centered around a river, this got my heart pounding and creeped me out a little bit but not so badly that I couldn’t sleep or anything (unlike some other books I’ve read).  The school setting gave it a young atmosphere and the fresh writing style was a pleasure to read.

This was an interesting book, very enjoyable and different.

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this ARC to read and give an honest review.  I have previously enjoyed some of Linn’s other books and you can find my reviews of these here.  This book is part one in a fascinating series of three novellas about Ceri’s Journey.

Tide – Daniela Sacerdoti

Tide

“Sarah Midnight is no ordinary teenager.  She is a demon hunter, caught up in one of the deadliest wars unknown to man.  Orphaned at the age of sixteen, Sarah learned the family trade of hunting without her parents to guide her but under the watchful eye of her ‘cousin’, who was revealed to be Sean Hannay, no relative at all, but a dear friend of the real Harry Midnight.

Now the fight continues.  Sarah and Sean may have defeated the Scottish Valaya, but the rest of the war still rages on, and Sarah, Sean, Nicholas and their companions must unearth the identity and location of the enemy – the leader of the demons – before the world plunges into the Time of Demons once more.  Their quest leads them to Sarah’s family home, the Midnight mansion in Islay, and there they discover horrible truths about the demon ruler, his plans, and Sarah’s own personal history.

Along the way, Sarah must battle not only the demons but her hurt towards Sean and her feelings for the enigmatic Nicholas, who has plans of his own.”

Firstly I’d like to thank Black & White Publishing for sending me this paperback to read and give an honest review, I had really been looking forward to reading this after enjoying the first book in the trilogy Dreams, my review of which can be found here.

The story began with an interesting prologue which revealed a piece of Sarah’s family history, this was something that featured heavily throughout the book and I was pleased to have some of my leftover questions from Dreams answered.  After the prologue it picked up where the cliffhanger ending from last time had left off – Sarah was still being watched and Sean seemed to be stuck in some kind of uncomfortable limbo, until a surprise visitor turned up and told him something he really didn’t want to hear.

There were times when Sarah seemed lost and slightly bewildered by the events of her life, but her strength from the previous book definitely grew as she learned more about her history and this was great to see.  I felt unsure about Nicholas before and his behaviour this time around troubled me once again, when the truth about him was revealed I can’t say that I was too surprised because I had figured it would be something along those lines.  His plans for Sarah’s future were dark and unpleasant but despite this I found myself feeling sorry for him, particularly as the story progressed and I felt like I got to know him better.

The whole book had a mysterious feel to it and the author held my interest throughout with the many twists and turns in the storyline.  With new monsters and demons to defeat Sarah faced much more tragedy and in the midst of all this action was a hint of romance that was incredibly complicated but added a warm touch to the story.

Once again I enjoyed reading the characters inner thoughts, it really gave a clearer insight into the workings of their minds – you always discover the truth with those few little words.  I also loved how the author had created an exciting power for each member of the group of friends so that when they were together they seemed so powerful.

The visit to Islay was my favourite part of the book because it was where the story intensified – fierce battles were fought and shocking secrets were discovered, all of this seemed to change the direction of Sarah’s thoughts and gave her even more strength.

The author’s descriptive writing made it easy to visualise everything and I would love to see these books come to life as a movie.  I finished with a smile on my face and I’m full of anticipation about the next book, I just can’t wait to find out what happens next!

This was an action-packed and imaginative page turner which had me hooked from start to finish.
