7 Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells

7 Years Bad Sex Nicky Wells

“One wedding. One curse? Disaster ever after…

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain’t over ‘til it’s over or, in this case… it ain’t over ‘til the newlyweds sing.”

MY REVIEW

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this eBook to read and share my honest opinion. How could I not be looking forward to this book? I love Nicky’s writing (my previous reviews can be found here) and the title of this one just screamed ‘you must read me’! I admit I had high expectations for 7 Years Bad Sex and I’m glad it didn’t disappoint.

Giggling like a schoolgirl was pretty much the ongoing theme for me whilst reading this book. Picturing each scene, each predicament just gave me the giggles, especially as Nicky’s fabulous writing made me feel like I was there in the room with them, awkward!

During some of the more embarrassing moments I cringed on behalf of Casey and Alex, their mortification was palpable and I wanted to erase those moments for them because they were such an adorable couple. I was basically willing the two of them to get down to it – I never thought I’d be so wrapped up in someone else’s sex life!

The writing really was engaging, it completely pulled me into the storyline and made me think of it even when I wasn’t reading. I couldn’t stop turning the Kindle pages to find out what crazy, embarrassing thing would happen next and I found myself still reading at midnight on a couple of occasions.

There were a few surprising turns, Casey and Alex made some really odd decisions but I guess desperation (and a lack of communication) can make a person do strange things. Amongst all the funny parts were a few sparkles of tender moments which I really liked because it gave me the chance to see the ‘real’ side of the couple.

I’d like to share some of my favourite parts of the book with you, the parts that really stick out in my mind:

  • A bad breath problem.
  • An embarrassing incident involving workmen.
  • An interesting new bowling game!
  • An urgent 999 call.
  • A jaw dropping relationship counselling session.
  • Last but not least, two words – James and Rodge! Read the book and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

7 Years Bad Sex was a fabulously funny page-turner, I enjoyed every moment.

Here’s the blurb:

7 Years Bad Sex

Says Nicky:

This book came to me at a fancy dinner way back when in November 2013. It was a fairly drunken affair, and speeches were being made. We were all toasting each other and having fun. Then someone shouted at me. “You didn’t look at me. Argh! That means 7 Years Bad Sex.”

I don’t actually believe in curses, nor am I particularly superstitious. But at that precise moment, a story popped in my head in its entirety. The potential for entertainment with comic mishaps and other antics as a young couple tries to breathe life into their flagging romance was simply too delicious to ignore. And that’s how this book was born…

So what are you waiting for? Go and grab your copy, and the book will magically appear on your Kindle on the official release day of 14 May—not long to go. Here are those links again: Amazon – UK | US | DE | CA

EXCERPT

There was a stunned silence in the room while Alex and Casey tried to assimilate the importance of this statement. She remembered all too well her conversation with Alex on the yacht after they had trawled through the wedding video. He had pointed out to her even then that she hadn’t looked at him.
Casey shivered. She caught Alex’s eye and saw nothing but utter confusion. Liza was still standing up, one fist raised in an air punch. Sasha had taken one of Casey’s hands into her own.
Eventually Alex spoke. ‘Maybe we didn’t look at each other. So what?’
Liza and Sasha shared another look. ‘The seven-years-bad-sex curse!’ they shouted as one.
Alex burst out laughing. ‘The seven-years-bad-sex curse?’ he repeated. ‘You’re taking the mickey, right?’
Myles was chuckling so hard, he toppled over sideways on the sofa and had to hold his stomach. ‘That’s why we had to rush over here? To tell them about a seven-years-bad-sex curse?’
‘Laugh all you want,’ Liza said calmly. ‘But you’re watching it in action.’
Casey swallowed hard. She didn’t believe in curses. They were nothing but delusory superstitions from the middle ages. But still, both Sasha and Liza looked utterly serious.
‘So—so what does that curse entail?’ Casey asked, her voice almost a whisper.
Sasha produced her smartphone and called up a website. ‘It says here,’ she said, ‘there’s a superstition in many parts of southern Europe about how not looking at each other when clinking glasses during a toast brings couples seven years bad sex.’ She angled her phone so that everyone could see the screen.
‘And you were in France when you committed this ritualistic mishap,’ Liza offered helpfully. ‘So that definitely applies.’

This looks and sounds like another hit from Nicky and I just can’t wait to read it!

GUEST POST

Where did the idea for 7 Years Bad Sex come from? That’s probably the most burning question on everyone’s mind, right?

So it was at a dinner party. A rather fancy and quite drunken one, in November of 2013. Speeches were being made and toasts were being had. Except yours truly isn’t very good at holding her drink anymore. Seriously, one glass of wine does my head in. I blame two pregnancies and two lots of breastfeeding, but I digress.

Toasts were being made, and I was struggling to keep up with who was saying what. Glasses were being clinked, and I was looking the wrong way. Suddenly I was being admonished. “You didn’t look at me—that means seven years bad sex,” I was told. Of course I guffawed. Cue Nicky’s education on the superstition that is the ‘7 Years Bad Sex curse.’ I was intrigued, and the idea for this book popped in my head—inebriated though it was—right there, right then in its entirety.

It still seemed a good idea the next morning, and the week after, and after a due cooling off period I did some research, and then I got planning. I had a few other things in the hopper that I needed to write first, but finally, it got done. It’s very satisfying to see a plan from way back when finally spring into action.

PS: I’m not superstitious, nor do I believe in curses. But I have been finding myself looking at my toasting partner much more carefully these past few months….

Spirits of Christmas by Nicky Wells

SMALLA4Guitar_Spirits

“At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous self-destruction.

Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.

Will the Spirits help Jude put the friendship, love, and rock music back into his Christmas?”

Spirits of Christmas is a modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who adores the festive season.

EXCERPT

‘Hiya, Jude!’

The voice emerged from the door, and Jude’s head whipped round as if drawn by a string.

‘Hiya, Jude,’ the voice repeated cheerfully. Unexpectedly, it launched into the first line of one of Jude’s most favourite songs. Jude once again sank onto the bed, his legs refusing to carry him with the shock of this second apparition.

‘Is this really you?’

For a moment, Jude’s second otherworldly visitor abandoned his song and remained silent, motionless, allowing Jude to take a good, long look. The sideburns, the nose, the defined chin, the round glasses were clearly visible despite the spirit’s transparent appearance.

Everything about this figure was familiar, yet nothing was quite as it should have been. It was as though Jude was looking at a hologram, a distorted, stretched vision where nothing quite fitted together.

Nonetheless, Jude found his voice. ‘Oh my God, it is you!’

Excitement made his exclamation strong and clear. The figure flinched at the sudden burst of noise, but Jude ploughed on. ‘This is…this is totally unreal. I mean, imagine this—here’s me in my bedroom, and there’s you, come to visit me.’

‘I’m not who you think you see,’ the apparition interrupted. ‘I’m the Ghost of Christmas Past.’

MY REVIEW

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this eBook novella to read and give an honest review.

Nicky Wells has done it again with this fantastic rock twist on the classic A Christmas Carol story! Jude was an unpleasant character to begin with and I was looking forward to seeing how he would fare with the ghosts.  Obviously knowing the story well I knew where everything was heading but I still thoroughly enjoyed following Jude on his journey, I’ve never read a rock’n’roll version before so this was an exciting experience for me.

The ghosts provided some eerie moments and the descriptive writing style made it so easy for me to visualise each scene.  To tie in with Nicky’s Rock Star Romance Trilogy there were mentions of Tuscq and Dan Hunter – I absolutely loved this because it gave the story a familiar feel, almost like I was catching up with old friends!

Just like the traditional version this was thought-provoking and encouraged me, the reader, to think about my own life from a different perspective.  Jude’s character developed beautifully and I really enjoyed seeing the change in him.

Another hit from Nicky Wells, this took me on an intriguing journey and left me with Christmas in mind!

MY REVIEW

Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this ARC to read and give an honest review.  I really enjoyed the first two books in the trilogy (my reviews can be found here) and I was excited to finally find out how it would all end but I also felt sad that there would be no more of Sophie’s adventures to follow.

This is a difficult review to write because there is only so much I can say without giving too much away, I will try my best though…

At the end of the last book there was a wedding and an exciting announcement.  A girly chat between Sophie and her friend Rachel at the beginning of this book revealed so much, some of which I struggled to comprehend (my jaw totally hit the floor).  Once it all sank in I quickly found myself immersed in this fabulous story – I just love how Nicky still managed to surprise me after three books!

Sophie’s life had moved on quite dramatically in good ways and in bad, the difficult parts were superbly written as the strength of her feelings jumped off the page at me and left tears pouring down my face. Dan was his usual charming and swoon-worthy, rock star self and their friendship was even more complicated this time round (something I didn’t think was possible), although I will say that I think their connection was stronger than ever too.

As always I enjoyed the musical side, the lessons in mixing and mastering were fascinating – I had no idea so much went into the whole process!

There were many ups and downs that kept me entertained throughout, some of my favourite moments included: an amusing fact about snails, a very merry Christmas, an interesting new use for a guitar case and a magical theme park holiday.  Towards the end I kind of knew what was about to happen but despite this it still managed to take my breath away!

I feel as though I was taken full circle with this book in a way that was fitting for such a great series. Seeing Sophie grow through each of the books has been wonderful and the beautiful epilogue left me smiling with happiness for her.

Sophie’s Encore was totally unexpected but in a very good way, this series finished with a bang and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has ever had a crush on a star :).

GUEST POST

Happy, exhilarated, bereft. Or: how it feels to finish a Trilogy.

It’s done. My third book, Sophie’s Encore, has hit the virtual shelves. The long-awaited conclusion to the epic romance between my girl-next-door, Sophie, and rock star extraordinaire, Dan, is written and published for the world to see. I’m not saying how it’s gonna end but… You wanted to know how it feels to get to The End. Well, let me see….

The beginning of the end: the writing of Sophie’s Encore

Monday, 8 October 2012. 9:30 am.

Cup of tea—check.
Laptop at the ready—check.
Plotline tacked to the wall—check.

I start typing. “So how is Dan?”

To my great surprise, I find that my hands are shaking. This is it. I’m going to bring the story to an end. I’m starting on the last leg of the journey, and I’m frightened. I know where I’m going, of course, but what will I do when I get there?

Sophie, Dan and me: Long-time friends

For eight years now, Sophie and Dan have lived in my head. For the past two years, they’ve been my and my family’s constant companion. Between us, we have talked about them as though they were real persons. But when I’m done, I’ll have to say goodbye. I hate goodbyes.

Still, there’s nothing for it but to forge ahead, so I start writing fast and furiously. As I’m working my way through my meticulous plan, I make some astounding discoveries.

The devil and the detail and all that…

First of all, chronology matters. Doh, right? Evidently I’ve planned the Trilogy in great detail, and still things trip me up. Ages, mostly. Sophie was 28 when the Trilogy started, and Dan was 38. They had birthdays ‘in between’ books and also quite prominently in Sophie’s Run, when Sophie celebrates her 30th birthday with astounding consequences, and Dan his 40th with ditto.

But time’s moved on. More birthdays have been had and other life-changing events have transpired. I find myself referring back to Sophie and Dan’s early romance as having been seven years ago. Oh, hang on, wasn’t it eight? Or maybe nine? *Cue nail-biting* Turns out that counting back in years yields a slightly different answer than counting back in ages.

My solution? More planning. I make a large table with twelve columns for months and several rows for years passed. I mark birthdays. I make the start and end of each book. I mark key events. I figure it out.

Next up, I’ve grown. My outlook has changed, and my perspective on Sophie and Dan’s fate has changed. Moreover, narrated time between books has passed, so Sophie herself has grown. I decide to tackle that issue head-on by having Sophie, Dan and Rachel reflect on how things are different for them, now.

I get so involved in fine-tuning these last details that I completely forget about the pain of goodbye as I feverishly approach the finishing line.

Done, done, done!

It’s end of January 2013 by the time I finish Sophie’s Encore. While I don’t exactly write the words, “The End”, I definitely know that this is the end, and do you know what? I shed a little tear or three. Happy tears, I hasten to add. And proud tears. I feel bereft and exhilarated at the same time.

Onwards and upwards

To stem the floods, I move on immediately. I start planning book 4; a new book, a new story, new characters, a fresh start. I mock up a cover for Sophie’s Encore. I launch Sophie’s Run. I conceive of a completely unscheduled mini-project that gets planned, written and completed in the space of four or five weeks. I edit Sophie’s Encore. I start writing book 4. See? There’s no standing still here, the only way is forward. I’ve dried those tears and launched myself headlong into new adventures.

So watch out, here I come! I have a surprise for you later this year, and my fourth full-length book, Fallen For Rock, is scheduled for release in the summer of 2014. Meanwhile, happy reading of Sophie’s Encore! I’d love to hear what you think!!

EXCERPT

My bedroom door opened slowly and Dan crept in. All thought of sleep forgotten, I flicked the light back on and was met by an astonishing sight. There was Dan, the rock star, legend for his antics on and off stage, clad in a demure pair of checked pajamas with a button-up top and a mismatched, stripy dressing gown. His feet were stuffed into fluffy slippers, and he clutched a bottle and two glasses in his hands.

“Come on,” he whispered. “Dinner is served.”

I giggled and left my bed, grabbing my own stripy dressing gown and a pair of thick socks.

“What are you doing?” I breathed into his ear, but he simply took my hand and pulled me down the dark corridor toward the open-plan lounge.

“Have a seat,” he invited me and gestured at the dining table, which was once again laid, although only for two, complete with candles and napkins.

He set down the bottle and glasses and scurried off to shut the lounge door. While he busied himself in the kitchen, I basked in the heat from the fire which Dan had re-stoked, and observed my rock star with some degree of amusement.

Within a few minutes, he brought a dish of smoked salmon bites to the table, followed by olive bread, a cheese board, various cold meats, olives, pickled anchovies, and prawns with some sort of aioli dip. He popped the cork on the bottle of champagne, poured two glasses, and sat down, satisfied at last.

“Now we can eat,” he announced. “Tapas. What do you think?”

I raised my glass. “Cheers,” I giggled. “So that’s what you meant earlier. I think it’s amazing. It’s like a midnight feast. I’m just waiting for matron to discover us and give us detention. Why all the secrecy?”

Dan speared a prawn and pointed it at me. “Well, for one, as you say, matron will certainly come and give us detention. Peter is very strict on my sleep regimen, you see.” He dipped the prawn into the aioli before popping it into his mouth. The beatific look on his face and his scrunched up eyes suggested he was enjoying this humble treat far more than was warranted.

He swallowed and cleared his throat. “And for another, I’m on a strict diet. Every last bit of cheese gets weighed, the carbohydrates counted, the sugar added up. It’s really tedious.” He grimaced.

I helped myself to some bread and salmon. “Tedious indeed, I can see that. But why? I thought you were supposed to eat lots and get better.” I chewed greedily, my tummy having given an impressive rumble.

Dan speared another prawn and added a mountain of cheese and bread to his place. “Bliss,” he murmured before explaining further. “I’m supposed to eat healthy, not lots. So Peter has taken it upon himself to reform the bad eating habits of a lifetime. Bless him, it’s what he’s paid to do. I’ve been going along with it, and I have to admit, I’m feeling pretty good. But…”

He grinned his school-boy grin, took a big mouthful of food, washed it down with a large gulp of champagne, and finished his thought. “Well, it gets boring. And I wanted to do something special with you. On my own.”

I burst out laughing, but quieted down when I saw the alarm on Dan’s face.

“Sorry,” I whispered.

“Peter’s bedroom is right next door there,” Dan whispered back. “And he’s a light sleeper.” He pointed his finger, and we sat in silence for a minute, straining to hear.

“I think we’re okay,” Dan finally concluded and resumed eating.

I giggled softly. “Naughty, naughty, us.”

“Ha, we’re not naughty yet,” Dan shot back, speaking softly as well. “I was working up to that part.”

He winked, and my heart skipped and jumped. He didn’t mean—he couldn’t mean what I thought he meant?

“What do you mean?” I bumbled, hoping for clarification, but Dan was enjoying himself.

“All in good time,” he teased. “Let’s finish our meal first.”

“Her famous star remains her rock while life takes her on a little detour…

Who says that the road towards true love is straight and even? Sophie is certainly discovering that it is anything but.

So she has finally found the man of her dreams! Well… she knows who he is, even though she hasn’t actually quite met him yet. But she misses her opportunity, and then her life goes crazy. Rock star and ex-fiancé, Dan, keeps getting in the way of her new romance—even if he is just trying to be helpful. A fire, an impromptu mini-trip with Dan, and a dreaded wedding later, Sophie is still struggling to meet the love of her life. Then, just as she is getting it together with her perfect man, best friend Rachel commits an act of unspeakable betrayal.

Sophie has had enough. Confused and distraught, she decides that it is time for radical change. Surprising herself and shocking her friends, she embarks on a secret journey and eventually gets her life back on track.”

Firstly I’d like to thank Nicky Wells for sending me an ARC to read and give an honest review, I’m so excited to be part of the fantastic blog tour for Sophie’s Run!

I always feel about nervous reading the sequel of a book that I’ve enjoyed so much (my review of Sophie’s Turn can be found here), I worry that it won’t live up to my expectations but I needn’t have worried with this book because somehow it managed to surpass all my expectations – in short, it blew me away! This series is definitely one of my favourites, Nicky has an incredibly natural writing style that draws you in and I love how she keeps you guessing throughout the whole book (and then leaves you guessing about the next one!).

The prologue hinted at some kind of betrayal and whatever it was, Sophie was pretty upset by it. Moving on to the main body of the story and Sophie was singing in a choir, this is where Steve first came to light in a wonderful thunderbolt and lightening way! Sophie seemed to be much more savvy this time round and not at all star-struck by Dan and his glitzy lifestyle but he was still very much involved in her life (thank goodness!). I was so excited to be back in Sophie’s world with the lovely, and extremely sexy, Dan that I quickly found myself caught up in the extravagance of it all – I thought the book had an expensive feel to it.

Along came many twists and turns, there really wasn’t a dull moment: a disastrous birthday party, singing in the studio, a trip to Berlin which included a hilarious dress buying trip and an unexpected meeting in a hospital which led to… well I won’t tell you what that led to, you’ll have to find out for yourself ;).

After a very strange trip to Scotland things quickly went downhill for Sophie – the prologue had hinted at betrayal and it was at this point that I began to get an inkling of what the betrayal would be, I really hoped I was wrong but it turned out that I was spot on and I felt just as outraged as Sophie! I had become so attached to her character that I could almost feel her hurt jumping out at me and this just made me even more annoyed about what had happened. I soon calmed down when the story changed perspectives and I got to hear from the characters in question – I loved this part because it added an interesting twist and explained certain things.

Sophie’s trip to Langeoog, Germany, was fantastic and made me want to try drinking a cup of tea in the way that was described. Her time on the island was calming and I enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere that it created. Later on, I loved learning about the German wedding tradition – what a fun addition to a wedding!

I didn’t want the story to end but unfortunately it had to, the ending was lovely even though it was unexpected – I guess a part of me was still expecting/hoping for a different outcome. Then came Dan’s song lyrics (beautiful) and a note from Sophie, I loved this extra information particularly as it gave me hope for the next book (I won’t elaborate too much on that though :)) and now I just can’t wait to read Sophie’s Encore which is due to be released on 7 September 2013!!

This was another fantastic read from Nicky Wells, if you liked Sophie’s Turn you’re going to LOVE Sophie’s Run!

Sophie: Thank you so much for taking part in Nicky Wells (my author)’s blog tour for her second novel, Sophie’s Run. We’re absolutely delighted to be here today, Kate!

Dan: We love taking you on tour with us!

Sophie: Absolutely. And today, we’re sharing with you one of our favorite recipes for…

Dan: LOVE!

Sophie: (nudges him sharply in the ribs) … fabulous scallops. I love scallops! Their sweetness and that juicy tenderness…. (mock swoons)

Dan: I rest my case. Recipe for love!

Sophie: Do you remember when I had scallops in that restaurant when you took me for a first date, way back when?

Dan (frowns, then smiles): What, that night when I had to hide in Rachel’s utility cupboard?

Sophie: Uhm… yeah. That night. My God, those were the days…

Excerpt from SOPHIE’S TURN, Part 1 in the Rock Star Romance Trilogy:

“So, what’s with that boyfriend of yours?” Dan ambushed me with a mischievous grin. “Are you happy?”
I choked on my scallops and sipped at my wine to clear my throat and steady my nerves. Take it easy, a voice whispered in my head, but I ignored it.
“I don’t know,” I confessed, surprising both Dan and myself. “There’s something missing. I’m…bored.” Dan raised his eyebrows.
“Not bored…not exactly. I don’t really feel like me, half the time.” Blimey, where had that profound insight come from? I changed the subject before I did further damage.
“What about you? Are you with someone?”
Dan smiled a sad smile. “Not really, no,” he supplied.

Later that night:

“So Dan walked me here, to your flat, on piggy back, so that I could be here when Tim came by? And you met Dan? And you both put me to bed? And then Dan had to hide in the utility cupboard because Tim had already arrived and was coming up the stairs?”
I paused and looked at Rachel to gain confirmation, once more, of this appalling fact.

Sophie: Goodness, I’d almost forgotten about that.

Dan: Only almost?

Sophie: Well. You know. Anyhoo, aren’t we here to talk about the next bit of our story?

Dan: Definitely. Sophie’s Run. Love it. The story totally rocks. Obviously I love it most when we’ve got you back.

Sophie: (blushes, mumbles into her sleeve): Sorry about that.

Dan: All’s forgiven. But let’s tell these lovely folks how we make your favorite scallop dish.

So here’s the How To: Rock Star Scallops and Pancetta

To make a romantic starter for two, you need…
About twenty small scallops
Four rashers of streaky pancetta
Two handfuls of wild rocket (arugula in the US)
One clove of garlic
One teaspoon of hot smoked paprika powder
Dash of lemon
Olive oil

And here’s what you do

First, marinade the scallops. Place scallops in a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Add the teaspoon of paprika powder and the crushed garlic clove, plus a dash of lemon. Leave to marinate for five to ten minutes.

1

Place the rashers of pancetta under a very hot grill. Allow four minutes on each side, and remember to turn. Keep an eye on the bacon lest it should burn.

2

Bring a griddle pan to a really high heat. When you’ve turned the pancetta over, place the scallops in the pan and fry on each side for two minutes, no more! (If you’re using King scallops, you might need to allow three minutes per side, but take care not to overcook).

Arrange a handful of rocket (arugula) as messily as you like on two plates. Remove the scallops from the pan and distribute across the plates. Place the rashers of pancetta on top. Et voila!

Serve with crusty white bread and a crisp, dry white wine.

Dan: YUM! Let’s tuck in.

Sophie: (waves) Bye folks, see you later… And don’t forget to meet us in Sophie’s Run!
