The Evolution of Mara Dyer – Michelle Hodkin

The evolution of mara dyer

“Mara Dyer knows she isn’t crazy.  She knows she can kill with her mind, and that her boyfriend, Noah, can heal with his.  Mara also knows that somehow, her ex, Jude, is not a hallucination.  He is alive.

Unfortunately, convincing her family and doctors that she’s not crazy isn’t easy.  The only person who actually believes her is Noah.  But being with Noah is dangerous and Mara is in constant fear that she might hurt him.  She needs to learn how to control her power, and fast!

Together, Mara and Noah must try and figure out how Jude survived the asylum collapse, and how he knows so much about her strange ability… before anyone else ends up dead.”

I bought this book after reading and enjoying The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (review here), I couldn’t wait to find out what was in store for Mara this time!

The main events of the previous book had been cleverly woven into the beginning of this book so I had a very clear picture of what was going on.  Mara was now in a psychiatric unit, this was a frustrating time for her as she struggled to convince everyone that she was telling the truth about her shocking discovery.  Mara’s fear was palpable and I found my heart beating faster many times throughout the story.

Mara’s relationship with Noah was just as exciting this time round, they knew a lot more about each other and Mara really leaned on him for support.  Noah was wonderful, I loved how passionately he tried to protect Mara and although he seemed to be keeping things to himself I couldn’t help but fall a little bit in love with him.  Particularly after reading things like this:

“If I were to live a thousand years, I would belong to you for all of them.  If we were to live a thousand lives, I would want to make you mine in each one.”

It was good to see Jamie again, he was a very real character with a bit of a crazy streak and I enjoyed his friendship with Mara – he seemed to be someone who she could truly trust.

When I was taken on a flashback to the past, I felt a little confused and couldn’t figure out why it had happened or what it meant.  The significance of the flashbacks soon became clear though and this made it easier for me to connect the two times together.

There were plenty of weird, eerie and intense occurrences throughout the book, I wanted to know why all of this was happening to Mara because even though I had come up with a couple of theories I just wasn’t sure of the reason.  Apparently I was right not to be sure because my theories didn’t even come close to the truth – this is a difficult series to predict!

Towards the end the intensity grew and the eeriness soared, my heart was pounding furiously as events unfolded before me.  I was utterly stunned by the ending so I can’t wait for the next instalment to find out if what I think happened, really did happen!

This was another amazing read that captivated my mind with its unique blend of scary, weird and romantic antics.

The Evolution of Mara Dyer can be purchased from The Book DepositoryAmazon or from most good book retailers.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer – Michelle Hodkin

The unbecoming of mara dyer

“When Mara Dyer wakes up in hospital with no memory of how she got there, or any explanation as to why the bizarre accident that caused the deaths of her boyfriend and two best friends left her mysteriously unharmed, her doctors suggest she start over in a new city, at a new school, and just hope her memories gradually come back.

But Mara’s new start is anything but comforting.  She sees the faces of her dead friends everywhere and now she’s started to see other people’s deaths before they happen.  Is she going crazy?  As if dealing with all this isn’t enough, Noah Shaw, the most beautiful boy she’s ever seen, can’t seem to leave her alone.  But does he have her best interests at heart, or another agenda altogether?”

I bought this book because I had heard great things about it and wanted to see for myself if it was as good as everyone said it was, my opinion after reading is (drumroll please) that it was an absolutely amazing read! Here’s why:

The start was intense and eerie and set the scene for the rest of the book, at this point I had so many questions racing through my mind and as the mystery and intrigue continued I found myself completely unable to put the book down.

Things got weirder for Mara when she moved to Florida for a fresh start after the accident, her first day at her new school was made even more difficult by strange hallucinations and unfriendly students. The one bright part of the day was when she met Jamie, he was a great character who I really liked and hope to see more of in the next book.  This was also when she came across the gorgeous Noah, he was persistent and confident (the perfect combination for a hot male character in my opinion) and apparently rather shocked that Mara wasn’t falling at his feet!  They shared some feisty banter whenever they were together and this was something that I particularly enjoyed.  However, I had a feeling that something wasn’t quite right about him and I was just waiting for the moment when all would be revealed.

Mara suffered some disturbing flashbacks about the accident that had changed her life so drastically, each flashback added another piece to the puzzle and I was on the edge of my seat, desperate to discover the truth about that fateful night.

The ending was so unexpected – I felt dazed as I closed the book and thought back to everything I had read, looking at it in a different way.  I can’t wait to read the next book The Evolution of Mara Dyer which luckily is already out and on my to read pile!

This was an exciting and sometimes spooky book that enchanted me from start to finish.
