Halflings – Heather Burch

Halflings

“After being inexplicably targeted by an evil intent on harming her at any cost, seventeen-year-old Nikki finds herself under the watchful guardianship of three mysterious young men who call themselves halflings.  Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with.

A growing attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. While she risks a broken heart, Mace and Raven could lose everything, including their souls.

As the mysteries behind the boys’ powers, as well as her role in a scientist’s dark plan, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that will affect the future of an entire race of heavenly beings, as well as the precarious equilibrium of the earthly world.”

I bought this eBook from Amazon after reading good reviews about it, it sounded like my kind of read and I hadn’t read an angel based story for a while so I was looking forward to starting.

It was action-packed from the start, Nikki appeared to be running for her life from a pack of wolf type creatures and to be honest none of it made a whole lot of sense but it intrigued me enough that I wanted to read on so that I could make sense of it.

Next the halflings were introduced and boy was there some tension between them!  I probably don’t need to explain this but, as the name suggests, they were half angel, half human.  My first impression of the boys were as follows: Raven was cool, confident yet rather arrogant, Mace was caring, focused but easily wound up and Vine seemed young, quiet and really excitable.  They were on some kind of mission that had something to do with Nikki but at this point (and through most of the book) it wasn’t clear exactly what the mission was.

Nikki was a likeable character, I really loved her courage as she faced what most people would cower away from.  She had never been interested in boys so she felt confused by her feelings of desire towards Mace.  When Raven began to get under her skin too she was even more puzzled and I could almost feel her emotion rolling off the pages.  I’m a big fan of fictional love triangles so this was perfect for me, especially as it included the classic good/sweet guy against the bad/hot guy scenario :).

As always I had a few favourite parts – the barn scene, a touching moment by the lake and the commotion at the art gallery were all things that stick in my mind as being a great part of the book.  I also enjoyed the humour, there wasn’t a lot of it but when it was there it was appropriate and funny.

I found it very difficult to make predictions with this book, I constantly found myself wondering where the story was heading and trying to figure out all the secrets but I just couldn’t manage it (this is a good thing in my opinion because it kept me on my toes).  There were a couple of very unexpected sad moments that had my eyes filling with tears, these twists made me even more keen to discover the truth.

The introduction of female halflings towards the end was very interesting as I felt sure that they would cause problems between Nikki and the male halflings – you’ll have to read the book yourself to find out if I was right!

Things turned strange towards the end and the mysterious Damon Vessler was the main reason for this, I had lots of theories about him and I can’t wait to read the next book to find out if any of them were accurate.

Packed with danger and exciting moments, this was a book that kept me turning page after page.  I was in a wonderful half-angel bubble whilst reading and I just didn’t want it to end.
