The Pleasures of Autumn by Evie Hunter

Autumn

“When museum curator Sinead O’Sullivan is charged with stealing the Fire of Autumn, a dazzling ruby with a history of violence and treachery, bail is set at one million Swiss francs. Investigator Niall Moore is hired to stop her fleeing and to find the jewel.

Their sexual chemistry is electric but logic says to ignore it. Desperate as she is to convince Niall of her innocence, Sinead cannot reveal everything she knows. And the feisty red-head’s improbable tale tells him that she is not to be trusted.

Yet it’s impossible to ignore the carnal heat between them. Niall, an expert interrogator, uses every trick of the trade – and every weapon in his erotic armoury – to get at the truth. Sinead, a fast learner, counters his every move with one of her own. Thief and thief-taker fight for dominance and there can be only one winner.

But what happens in their red-hot game of cat-and-mouse when criminals chasing the precious jewel come after Sinead … and the stakes become deadly?”

Firstly I’d like to thank the publisher for sending me this book to read and give an honest review.  I am a big fan of The Pleasures series so I couldn’t wait to get started on this one!  You can read my reviews of the previous books here.

The prologue gave me a clear insight into Sinead’s character, I felt as though I knew her well after just a few pages.  Niall had appeared in The Pleasures of Summer so I was looking forward to finding out more about him.  To begin with I was surprised by how quickly things happened between them but I soon discovered that it wasn’t going to be all smooth sailing and what followed had me on the edge of my seat.  Sinead’s secret was an interesting one and I couldn’t wait to see what reaction she would get when she revealed all.

The whole criminal cat and mouse chase completely reeled me in, I felt that there was the perfect mix of dangerous and sexual scenes – there certainly wasn’t time to get bored with the non-stop action involved in this book!

I loved the strong connection between the characters, this made them feel real and likeable to me.  I was left with a few questions about a couple of the characters so I’m hoping they might feature in the next book.  The lovely epilogue finished the book with a rather romantic conclusion which I really enjoyed.

These authors have once again managed to inject a special brand of magic into their writing which captivates me as a reader entirely.

This was a sizzling, exciting read that held my attention throughout.

A Touch of Summer – Evie Hunter

A touch of summer

To protect….. and serve

Bodyguard Flynn Grant has problems keeping his hands of his latest client – wayward airline heiress Summer O’Sullivan. She’s already tried to seduce him, but he doesn’t mix business with pleasure. After spending a week with her in a remote Scottish safe house, Flynn is in danger of changing his mind.

He’s already chopped enough wood for several winters and he badly needs to let off some steam before the sizzling sexual chemistry between them catches fire. An injured team-mate provides the solution. Flynn and Summer are invited to attend some very special highland games.

Just how much trouble can Summer get into, surrounded by the most elite operatives in the body-guarding world? Flynn is about to find out, when they embark on a highland fling.”

I got this eBook novella when it was available as a free download from Amazon (current price 77p).  I have read and enjoyed other books by Evie Hunter (reviews here) so I was looking forward to this one.

A Touch of Summer is set in the middle of The Pleasures of Summer during Flynn and Summer’s time at the croft.  They took a trip further north to an island for some kind of military competition which meant that Summer was surrounded by soldiers (not a bad thing in my opinion ;)).  Flynn, however, began to regret his decision pretty much as soon as they arrived – I loved his jealousy, it was great to read and created some very heated moments between the two of them.

I really enjoyed this extra glimpse into Flynn and Summer’s relationship, I think it would be a good little taster for the main book but I would recommend reading The Pleasures of Summer first purely because it gives you the full back story.  I feel that having the knowledge of what went on before this made it easier to connect to the characters in this one.

Warning: this book contained strong language and sexual scenes so if you are likely to be offended by this then it probably isn’t a book for you.

This was a quick, sexy read that filled the gap before The Pleasures of Autumn which is due for release in October 2013!

The Pleasures of Summer – Evie Hunter

The pleasures of summer

“Summer O’Sullivan is rich, beautiful and in mortal danger. Her father has made powerful enemies who are targeting his precious daughter. Until the threat passes, Summer needs a bodyguard – someone to protect her and, she expects, to treat her with the reverence she’s used to.

Into Summer’s gilded cage comes former ranger, Flynn Grant. As far as Flynn is concerned, this is the assignment from hell, minding the spoilt daughter of a multi-millionaire. Summer and Flynn are poised to hate each other on sight. Even his devastating looks do not make up for how Flynn’s rules cramp Summer’s style. Unsurprisingly, the sparks fly between them. But when Summer breaks the rules one time too often, Flynn teaches her a lesson that leaves them shattered – and bound together in a way that astonishes them both.

In their remote hideout, the two start a battle over who is the tamer, and who is the tamed. It’s a duel that stretches their minds and bodies beyond every limit. And in time their hearts begin to surrender too.

But when the dark forces that have been stalking Summer finally track them down, the battle is no longer a game, but a matter of life and death …”

Firstly I’d like to thank the publishers Penguin Ireland for sending me this book to read and give an honest review.  I previously read and reviewed The Pleasures of Winter and A Touch of Winter both of which I really enjoyed so I was definitely looking forward to reading this one.

The prologue was tense and full of action, it set the scene well – I was immediately thinking of questions: Who was the guy in the van? Why was he after Summer? What happened next?  It was clear even from that point that I would be hooked by this storyline!

Six months later and Summer was still facing security issues so her father put his foot down and demanded that she have a bodyguard.  I had a bit of a chuckle as Summer proceeded to get rid of a string of bodyguards one by one using some very sneaky tactics.  Then came the sexy and powerful Flynn, someone who was not going to be quite so easy to get rid of.

I have to admit that I wasn’t too sure about Summer to begin with, she seemed too spoilt and manipulative for my liking – I just couldn’t relate to any side of her at the start.  I soon realised though that her attitude and rebellious streak was mostly a front put on for other people’s benefit and inside she wasn’t half as confident.  Her initial curiosity into the world of Doms and Subs got her into a dangerous situation which put her off a bit but not completely, it was obviously a desire that was deep-rooted so I knew it wouldn’t be long before the issue came up again.

I absolutely loved the feisty chemistry and battles for power between Summer and Flynn, they were definitely well matched and this made their time together fun to read (they were very entertaining and I found myself laughing quite a few times when they clashed).

The writing style was captivating, it drew me in so that it felt like I was part of the book too.  These authors certainly know how to write good erotic fiction because once again the sexual parts were sizzling hot but I didn’t feel like they overwhelmed the actual storyline – this is important to me when reading this genre, it has to be about more than just the sex!

I was utterly gripped by the action-packed events leading up to the end, it was so exciting and really got my heart pounding.  This will be added to my one-day read list because I just couldn’t put it down and I can easily say that Evie Hunter’s books are so much better than the Fifty Shades series thanks to the fantastic storylines and wonderful characters.

Warning: The Pleasures of Summer contained strong language and sexual scenes so if you are likely to be offended by this then it probably isn’t a book for you.

This was another sizzling read with an exciting, dangerous twist – I would definitely recommend it!

The Pleasures of Summer can be purchased from The Book DepositoryAmazon or from most good book retailers.

Also available by Evie Hunter is the standalone erotic short story A Touch of Summer which I have waiting on my Kindle to read and review soon!

A Touch of Winter – Evie Hunter

A Touch of Winter

“A surprise anniversary trip to see her Dom turns into a nightmare for Abbie Marshall. She arrives at his home a day early and finds him with another woman. Devastated by his betrayal, Abbie does what she always does when she gets into emotional trouble – she runs like hell.

During a passion filled night, Abbie is exposed to the full force of Jack’s erotic arsenal. Despite his apparent infidelity, Winter’s touch has scorched a brand on her soul.

One that she’s not sure she can forget…”

I got this short story eBook when it was available as a free download from Amazon (current price 77p), I had previously read The Pleasures of Winter (my review of this can be found here) and was looking forward to catching up with Abbie and Jack.  I would recommend that this be read after reading The Pleasures of Winter because it was actually set after that book had ended.

The action started straight away when Abbie discovered Jack in a compromising situation, I had to smile when she reacted to it as I realised that her feisty streak was still going strong!  It was only when the perspective switched to Jack that I understood more of what had happened and this left me feeling conflicted.  The situation led to an intense standoff between the two of them and finally to an unexpected ending.

As with the first book I loved the fact that Abbie and Jack’s relationship was not a conventional Dom/Sub relationship, it was different to others I’ve read from this genre because Abbie just did not conform to typical Sub behaviour.

I would’ve liked the book to have been longer, I know it was a short story but it was a bit too short for my liking – I wanted more!

This book obviously contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature so you may not want to read it if you are likely to be offended by this.

The next book by Evie Hunter is The Pleasures of Summer and this is due to be released in paperback and eBook on 30 May 2013.

The Pleasures of Winter – Evie Hunter

“When reporter Abbie Marshall needs to escape Honduras, a private jet carrying a Hollywood A-lister is her only way out.  She has a ride home with Irish actor Jack Winter – notorious womanizer and all-round bad boy.  Having little interest in Hollywood, Abbie is stunned that she is shaken to the core by Winter’s blazing beauty and provocative mind.

After the plane’s nose-dive into the remote rainforest forces them to fight for survival, Abbie catches tantalizing glimpses of the complicated man behind the movie-star image.  And the more she sees of him, the more he touches some primal part of her that she is determined to suppress.  But after a moment of terror leads to a devastating encounter with Winter’s shadow side, Abbie’s detachment is shattered.

On returning to normal life, Abbie cannot forget what happened between them, or ignore the shocking rumours about the star’s private life.  Her struggle to make sense of her torment leads straight back to Winter, who is just as obsessed by her.  But if they are to have a relationship, Abbie knows she must embrace his hidden desires … and accept her own.

No longer caring about anything but their intoxicating love affair, Abbie is drawn deeper into the dark heart of Winter – and the secret that threatens to destroy everything…”

Firstly I’d like to thank Penguin Ireland for sending me this paperback to read and give an honest review. I don’t often read books from this genre but the blurb really intrigued me – I loved the idea of being stranded in the jungle with a sexy Hollywood star and couldn’t wait to see what would happen.

It has been said that this book will appeal to fans of Fifty Shades of Grey and I do agree but I honestly think that this is much better, the main reason being that I actually liked the characters in this book and I found the whole storyline in general far more interesting and exciting!

The action started straight away with Abbie finding herself in a bad situation in Honduras and it was during this time that she met Jack Winter.  There was something so likeable about Abbie and Jack, especially when they were together because the sparks really flew between them.  Abbie was a feisty woman and I admit to being concerned that once the dom/sub part kicked in this side of her would disappear but thankfully it didn’t, she remained strong right through the book.  Jack was sexy and powerful, I loved his reaction to Abbie particularly when she defied him because it was clear he wasn’t used to that kind of behaviour from women.

One of the best things about this book was that it switched from Abbie to Jack’s perspective throughout the whole book, this was an important factor for me because often these kind of books don’t give enough (if any) insight into what the male is thinking.

I loved their time in the jungle, it was just what I had hoped it would be and when they returned to civilization it got better and better.  There were so many twists to keep me interested – steamy online chats, old secrets and hurtful misunderstandings kept me turning page after page.

The erotic scenes were well written and not once did I feel as though that side of it had overwhelmed the rest of the story.

This book well and truly had me hooked and I look forward to more from the sexy Jack Winter and feisty Abbie Marshall in A Touch of Winter, this short story is already on my To Read List and is available to buy from Amazon.

The Pleasures of Winter can be purchased in eBook or paperback form from The Book DepositoryAmazon UK or Amazon US.
