Unearthly and Hallowed – Cynthia Hand

“Clara is part-angel.  Through terrifying visions of a forest fire she is shown her purpose: to save a beautiful, unknown boy.  When she finds Christian, the boy from her visions, he’s everything she could wish for.  But Clara discovers there’s a darker side to her purpose.  And if Christian is so perfect, why does she have feelings for someone else?”

I had read good things about this book so I thought I’d take a look for myself.  I really love the cover and the synopsis made me want to get stuck in straight away.

I was surprised to find that it took a while for this to really capture my interest, there were times I got a bit lost and didn’t fully understand what was going on, but once it did capture me I was hooked and couldn’t stop reading.  There were two gorgeous boy characters (Christian and Tucker) who contributed to some real heart-pounding romantic moments and lots of supernatural goings on that kept my interest until the end.

I enjoyed seeing Clara growing in confidence throughout the book and after making some surprising discoveries she begins to accept herself and her duty.

There is an unexpected twist at the end that left me wanting more, this story is so full of lies and secrets and I have many questions that still need answering.

“Part-angel Clara is still reeling from the choice she was forced to make amidst the vicious forest fire of her nightmares.  Now, torn between her love for Tucker and a destiny that will separate them, Clara is faced with another shocking revelation: someone she loves will die in a matter of months.  With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows is that the fire was just the beginning.”

This book was even better than the first, I was completely hooked from the start and just didn’t want to put it down.  It seemed like the deeper I got into the story, and the more things that were revealed, the more I fell in love with it and wanted to read on.

There were more lies uncovered and more unexpected twists in this book, some happy, some scary and some incredibly sad – I had tears in my eyes on more than one occasion whilst reading this.  I really enjoyed the fact that I couldn’t predict most of what was going to happen, it meant that I was genuinely shocked at some of the revelations and that made this story one of my favourites.

Something else that I found appealing about this book was that it was romantic but also dangerous, it made it really exciting to read.  The love triangle was very exciting too, it certainly pushed all the right buttons as far as I was concerned – there were dates, kissing, fun, laughter and the customary impossible decision of who to choose.

This is a wonderfully exciting and captivating story, I am extremely keen to read the next in the series!
