Existence – Abbi Glines

Existence

“What happens when you’re stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.

Pagan Moore doesn’t cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.

Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn’t let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he’s dead.

Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn’t realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.

He is Death and he’s about to break all the rules.”

This was a book that I had heard good things about and wanted to check it out for myself so I bought it during my birthday money spending spree.

It jumped straight into the action and Pagan’s first meeting with Dank/Death.  She didn’t know who he was at that point, she just thought he was a soul who could somehow talk to her.  I pretty much fell for Dank from the first time he spoke, he was a fantastic character who said all the right things. Pagan’s soul seeing was a fascinating part of the storyline but it was also the part that created the eerie atmosphere and gave me goosebumps.

Leif intrigued me, I couldn’t quite figure out where he fit in to begin with, but it soon became clear when Pagan’s involvement with him led her to trouble.  When a new guy, who happened to be a rock star, arrived at the school Pagan was thrown into confusion and I loved this twist in the storyline, I just couldn’t wait to find out where it would lead.

I can’t write this review without mentioning the sizzling chemistry between Pagan and Dank, having read another book by this author I can tell you that this is something she does well – she creates amazing tension between her characters which just seems to reach out and envelop me as I’m reading.

Pagan’s world got even crazier on a skiing trip; the things she saw and came to realise affected her deeply, she didn’t know how to process the information.  I shut the book with an ‘oh my god’ because I just hadn’t seen the fantastically teasing and intriguing last sentence coming! I can’t wait to see what happens in book two, Predestined.

This was a highly addictive read – eerie with a touch of romance and sizzle.
