The Morganville Vampires Book Four: Feast of Fools – Rachel Caine

“In the town of Morganville, vampires and humans have learnt to live in relative peace.  Still, Claire Danvers knows that after dark, her homework can take a backseat to staying alive.  But this tenuous harmony is turned on its head with the arrival of Mr Bishop.

Bad to the bone, the ancient old-school vampire cares nothing about keeping the peace; staying at the top of the food chain is enough.  What he wants from the town’s living and dead is unthinkably sinister.  It’s only at a formal ball attended by vampires and their human dates that Claire realises Bishop’s plan – and the elaborately evil trap he’s set for the warm-blooded souls of Morganville…”

This is the fourth book in The Morganville Vampires series and, just in case you had forgotten any of what had happened previously, there was a handy little reminder before the story began.

The first sentence of the book was brilliant:

“It was hard to imagine how Claire’s day – even by Morganville standards – could get any worse… and then the vampires holding her hostage wanted breakfast.”

This just sparked my interest straight away and created so many possible outcomes in my mind.

In this book there’s a new vampire in town and he is even more deadly and evil than those we’ve already met!  He turned everything upside down with his arrival and many new alliances formed because of it.  This was great because it meant that I got to see a different side to some of the previously unlikable characters.

I was pleased to finally learn more about Eve’s family, I now feel like I understand her character better and also her connection to the town.

The masked ball caused some serious friction between the four friends, Claire’s jealous side certainly came out when Shane was invited to attend with another woman!  The ball itself was very tense and literally had me biting my nails with nerves for them all, again I just couldn’t figure out how they would manage to get themselves out of the dangerous situation they were in.

By the end, the future of Morganville is not looking good and, although I think it was the right choice to make, I was surprised by Amelie’s announcement at the end.  It just leaves me wondering how that choice is going to affect them all in the books to come.

Another fabulous book full of breakthroughs, betrayal and a whole lot of danger.
